The Aim of the Project

In this project we are developing a device (incubator or reactor) which will make experimenting with variety of fermentations more easy and fun by being able to control variety of conditions, like for example temperature and humidity, together with measuring and recording these data. The long term goal is to offer the public a blue print of a machine which will help them to ferment at home and which they can effort. Ideally we produce easy to assemble kids which we make available on-line, if the things go really well we could make a complete product and offer it to the public as whole functional device. Now what should be are short, medium and other long term goals?

Features and principles which we pursue

  • open source - we share what we do, please do share too
  • versatility - the incubator should allow for variety of different cultures to be fermented/grown like for example cultivating yogurt cultures, tempeh but also growing mushrooms etc.
  • robust and upgradeable - what we build should last and the old models should be easy and cheap upgrade to the next generation
  • environmentally friendly - we should try to use materials which are not harming the environment if possible
  • project continuity - when the working prototype is done and ready we should start to work on next generation

How to build a prototype

This section is dedicated to coming up with strategies to make the ei happen.

Places for discussion, coordination and inspiration

There are many places where you ca go to get inspired, lets summarize some of them here. For now we discuss ei on our food hacking base mailing list and also on the ark reactor forum.
